Hyper pigmentation
Hyper pigmentation, otherwise known as sun or age spots, is caused by an increase in melanin, the substance in the body that is responsible for color (pigment). Certain conditions, such as pregnancy may cause a greater production of melanin and hyper pigmentation. Exposure to sunlight is the most common cause of hyper pigmentation, and will darken already hyper pigmented areas. It can also be caused by various medications, including some antibiotics and oral contraceptives. While these spots are not themselves cancerous, you may be at risk for skin cancer if you have them. Any dark spot that is either new or changing should be evaluated by a dermatologist.
